Consistency matters in the unique bracket-style format of Major League Fishing. Keep at it, find your groove, and maintain the pace. True to his name, Cliff Pace proved how rewarding that keeping up the pace can be, by winning the 2019 regular-season finale and Championship Round of MLF Stage Eight.

The Skeeter/Yamaha pro from Mississippi not only kept up his pace on Green Lake, Wisconsin. He ran away with the trophy after leading the second elimination round and never looking back. For the record, Pace won the Championship Round with 47 bass weighing 81 pounds, 9 ounces, to earn $100,000.

Floridian Bobby Lane made a run at Pace but couldn’t keep it up. He ended the Championship Round with 43 bass and a weight of 68-12. Californian Brent Erhler was third with 29 bass weighing 56-8, and Casey Ashley took fourth with 26 bass weighing 55-12. Brandon Coulter was fifth with 24 bass weighing 43-06.

Whether Created Perfect Conditions for Pace

Cloudy, windy conditions set up perfectly for Pace’s style of fishing. On that fateful day, he did most of the damage with a Jackall Rerange 110 jerkbait. To advance through the elimination rounds, he used a Jackall Aska and his signature Black Label Tackle CBS Balsa. A Ned rig, drop shot and swim jig produced strikes for less active fish. When the right cover was available, he used the flipping technique with a V&M Flat Wild.

Weather was a factor, and in fact, MLF officials had other nearby fisheries if those on the schedule were affected. There were a weather delay and Pace adjusted accordingly, with a switch to a Jackall Crosstail Shad paying off.

“After the delay, the wind was still blowing, and when we went back out, I caught one on the jerkbait on the first cast,” said Pace, on the pro staff for Skeeter Boats and Yamaha Outboards. “I never put it down after that. It was all about the conditions. I was looking for areas with rock since there was so much sand everywhere. The main thing on natural lakes is to find where there is a mix of rock and sand.”

It took all of those baits to make it to the end. The reason was the variety of playing fields that were part of the tournament. It began on Lake Winnebago; then the survivors fished Lake Butte des Mortis before the competition ended up at Green Lake.

Overall for the season, Pace advanced through three cuts, had two Top 10s and the win.
